Build Quality and Sound Hit the Mark - Strings and Fretwork Don't

I bought this bass for the purpose of doing a review and as a big Kala fan.

Quick Summary:

Pros:
- Great packaging
- Great sound
- Good setup
- Light
- Comes with a gig bag and a bag of goodies

Cons:

- The fretwork was really poor on the edges. You can feel every fret gliding down the neck

- The new La Bella round wound strings miss the whole point of the Bass Ukelele

So, straight out of the box this was one extremely well packaged bass. Probably the best packaging I've ever seen.

The gig bag is basic but decent quality.

The setup on the bass was pretty good. Needed a small tune and was good to go.

My playing style is predominantly Blues but I put this bass through a ton of genres and sounded amazing on all settings.

I took kit from a clean tone through to heavy Chorus, Distortion, Overdrive and sounded great.

The intonation over the fretboard was miles ahead of other Kalas of similar value that I've played. They have a history for poor intonation pasted the 5th fret but this was bang on.

However, the edges of the fret wire was very poor. The edges were really sharp which was disappointing.

The weight is very light that it feels cheap but the build quality seems pretty good.

Whilst the round wound strings which are now made by La Bella sound amazing but almost miss the point.

It sound like a regular bass guitar. You get a thumpy tone with the treble down on the preamp on the bass but doesn't sound the same.

The other disappointment is you can't put poly strings on without altering the nut as the TUSQ is designed to have round wounds.

It's fun, sounds amazing and is great to play but would have been miles better with the new Kala Flatwounds instead.

The tuner and preamp are decent and no issues.

The new bridge they come with is far better than what was used before and greatly improves the intonation which is really obvious.

The tuners are ok but this model doesn't come with the hipshot that the better models come with.

All in all. It's a good bass for the money but if you can afford the higher models, I would go for it.

I highly recommend getting the model with Aquila Thundergut strings.

Be-U-tiful

The WOW factor started with the unboxing this U-Bass as it is strikingly beautiful. I am an intermediate uke/guitar/bass player and was delighted with the acoustic sound, then I plugged in and knew I had what I wanted and needed in a bass. Bass sound, uke size what is not to like particularly when playing with other uke players. A terrific addition to my small collection. Love it.

U-Bass - a quality instrument

I was most surprised to find that the U-Bass had excellent tone to go with its spectacular good looks. The deep tone and wound strings were very welcome, and the U-Bass holds its tuning very well. I tested the built-in tuner and found it works fine but I prefer the clip-on style included in the package. Excellent packing of product and the additional items were a welcome surprise. The strap also included, works very well. Great service and efficient delivery of a quality musical instrument. Love playing the U-Bass!!!
